He would have called her friends and family whilst in Sheffield, saying he was worried he hadn't heard from her, and hoped one of them would go to the flat to make the discovery.
Besides, if his alibi wasn't cast-iron solid, he would have been arrested by now. I think it's more than safe to rule him out.
